Simon Duran Martinez, Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior at 11:10 p.m., Friday, March 2, 2012 at Landmark Hospital, Joplin, Missouri after a brief illness. His loving family was by his side as he went to Heaven to receive his eternal reward from Jesus.
Simon was born October 22, 1946 at Fort Davis, Texas to Simon Duran Martinez, Sr. and Alice (Rudy) Martinez. Simon attended schools in Texas and New Mexico. He met the love of his life, Sherry Winslow at Burlington, Colorado while working for Seismographic Service. On January 1, 1972 Simon and Sherry were married at Elk City, Oklahoma. To that union, one son, Simon Ray and three daughters, Sandra, Sara and Staci were born. After traveling for Seismographic Service, Simon and Sherry moved to Parsons in 1975.
Simon accepted the Lord on February 17, 2008 and served him faithfully since that time. Simon was a member of the Parsons Foursquare Church and the George L. Hendricks American Legion Post No. 102 of Erie, Kansas and volunteered for the Meals on Wheels Program. Simon loved his church and enjoyed serving on the Greeting Team, Food Pantry Committee, Transportation Committee and served wherever there was a need.
Simon was a Veteran of the United States Army with service in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970 as an Artillery Crewman of Automatic Weapons. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Expert Rifleman Medal and Medal of Good Conduct. He was employed at the Seismographic Service, KAAP and the City of Parsons as Waste Water Plant Supervisor, retiring from the City December 31, 2005 with 28 years of service. Through the years, he also worked for the Parsons Police Department Reserve Unit.
In addition to being a husband, father and grandfather and foster parent, he enjoyed fishing, camping with Sherry, yard work, avid fan of Kansas Chiefs and Cowboys, loved all sports and especially attending sport activities of their grandchildren.
Simon is survived by his wife, Sherry, his son Simon Martinez, daughters Sandra Martinez, Sara Myers and husband Kevin, Staci Martinez; thirteen grandchildren, Aiden Martinez, Khaner Martinez, Dontel Martinez, Johntae Fields, Trinity Fields, Deontae Fields, Damion Williams, Quentin Myers, Caleb Myers, Kaden Myers, Kaylee Myers, Jevon Perez and Jasmine Perez; and one great-grandchild Kyson Williams all of Parsons; three sisters, Linda Nunez, Pecos, Texas and Susie Ramos, Andrews, Texas, Adele Garcia, Hobbs, New Mexico; one brother, Juan Martinez, Odessa, Texas and two step-brothers, Slive and Steve Rubealcaba, Dallas, Texas along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and church family.
Simon was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Alice Martinez; stepmother, Martha Martinez; and stillborn grandson Javonte Fields.
Our loss is Heaven’s gain, as he will be greatly missed by family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2012 at the Parsons Foursquare Church, 98 East Main with Pastor Steve Schulze officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery with military honors given by George L. Hendricks American Legion Post No. 102. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Thursday, March 8, 2012 at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, 405 Main.
