Claude Lee “Bob” Bates, III, 64, of Oswego, died at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at his home.

He was born September 19, 1948, in Pryor, Oklahoma, to Claude Lee Bates, Jr. and Helen (Baker) Bates. He grew up and attended school in Pryor and Bristow, Oklahoma, and graduated high school in Sarcoxie, Missouri. He then served in the United States Navy.

In the 1970’s, he assisted his father at Bates Funeral Home in Chetopa. He then worked at Atlas Steel in Oswego and later at Sonoco Industries of Chetopa. He had been employed as a welder at Diamond Coach Corporation in Oswego for the past 13 years.

He was an avid horseshoe pitcher, a great fan of bluegrass music, and had attended bluegrass music festivals in Winfield, Kansas, with his wife and family for 33 years.

He and Susan Rife were married November 9, 1973, in Oswego. She survives of the home.

Additional survivors include: Mother – Helen Bates Carl Junction, MO Three Sons – Chris Bates Oswego, KS Drew Bates and his wife, Nickie Altamont, KS Brady Bates Oswego, KS Three Grandchildren – Haleigh, Kegan and Karsyn Bates One Brother – Lynn Bates Idaho Springs, CO Three Sisters – Becky Pierce Carl Junction, MO Belinda Barragar Parsons, KS Alicia Treat Tontitown, AR

He was preceded in death by his father, Claude Bates, in March of 2010.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 30, 2013, at the Oswego Community Center. The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., Friday, at the Oswego Community Center. A gathering of family and friends will be held for the “Red Dirt Hour” from 9-11:00 p.m., Friday, at the Bates residence located at 1006 S. Ohio in Oswego. Friends may call at their convenience from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Friday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa.

Memorials are suggested to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. These may be left at or mailed to the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 346, Chetopa, KS 67336.
