Born: September 12, 1940
Died: February 28, 2013
Robert J. “Bob” Greenough passed away peacefully at his home in Parsons at 10:10 a.m., Thursday, February 28, 2013. He had been in failing health. Bob was born September 12, 1940, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Robert A. Greenough and Mary Irene (Moneypenny) Greenough. At the age of 5, he moved to North Reading, Massachusetts, where he attended school. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1958 and was stationed at Schilling AFB in Salina, Kansas. Upon his honorable discharge in 1962, he moved to Parsons where he attended Parsons Junior College. In 1963, he married Mary Catherine Treiber at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in South Mound, Kansas. During his life, Bob worked at Wilson Brothers Sawmill in Parsons as a lumber inspector from 1963 to 1971. Bob and his family moved to North Anson, Maine, in 1971 where he worked as a lumber inspector until 1973. Upon returning to Parsons, he again worked for Wilson Brothers from 1973 to 1977. In 1977, he went to work for the Katy Railroad as a brakeman until 1983. In 1984, he began employment at the Beachner Companies in St. Paul. He built fences for the Beachner livestock operation and took great pride in the quality of his work. In 2011, Bob retired due to failing health. Bob enjoyed playing cards with family, KU basketball, gardening and working crossword puzzles. One of Bob’s greatest joys was his Catholic faith. He would not fail to tell you that he was a “lukewarm” Catholic until he made a Cursillo Retreat in 2003. This experience greatly increased his faith and led to a spiritual awakening and great spiritual growth. As a result of Bob’s “spiritual awakening”, he influenced many of the people he came into contact with to a deeper and more loving relationship with Jesus Christ. Bob was an active member of the St. Patrick’s Parish religious education team. His teaching and Christian example helped others learn about Christ and about living the Catholic faith. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary; three sons, Robert Greenough, Jr., David Greenough and his wife, Lynn, and Derek Greenough, all of Parsons; three daughters, Robin Oneth and Tracy Stover and her husband, Trace, of Wichita; and Paulette Greenough of Portland, Oregon. Bob is also survived by two brothers, Al Greenough of Hampstead, NH and Mike Greenough of Atkinson, NH; two sisters, Donna Crosson of Merrimac, MA and Jackie Silver of Amesbury, MA; eighteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Dean, an infant brother, Arthur; his in-laws, Ray and Dorothy Treiber; and a godchild, Leslie Treiber. The funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 4, 2013, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Parsons. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The Knights of Columbus rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m., Sunday, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The Parish rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, at the church.
