Barbara Ann "Ladybug" Thompson

Born: September 06, 1948
Died: March 04, 2013

Barbara Ann “Ladybug” Thompson, 64, of rural Altamont, Kansas, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, March 4, 2013. She had been in failing health. Barbara was born September 6, 1948, in Parsons, Kansas, to Louis Herold and Ruth (Grady) Herold. She attended Altamont Grade School and Labette County Community High School. She then attended John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. On July 5, 1969, she married Robert Lee Thompson and began following him around the world. First stop was Biloxi, Mississippi, then on to Misawa, Japan followed by Latiano, Italy. When she returned to Labette County with her husband and two children, she finished her Bachelor of Science in Education at Pittsburg State University. It was soon time to follow Bob again! The family lived in Bolingbrook, Illinois; Des Moines, Iowa; Pacifica, California; and lastly Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Sometimes Barbara worked as an elementary teacher while other times she worked as a professional Girl Scout. In 1977, Barbara became a Girl Scout leader. That was the beginning of a 35-year love affair! She held many positions during her years as both a volunteer and professional Girl Scout. The most important would be as a troop leader of all levels and a camp director. She not only taught girls skills, but taught them integrity and character. She helped to instill self-confidence in girls all over the USA, and even a few in other countries. Barbara loved to plan trips, especially for girls! Some of her favorite destinations were the four World Centers in India, Mexico, Switzerland, and the U.K. Her great loves were her family and God. She went on mission trips to Belarus, India and Sri Lanka to teach children and women about the love of her Lord Jesus Christ. She taught Sunday School and worked with Awanas. She loved planning trips for her family so that she and her family could see and learn new things. Disney Parks were some of her favorite destinations. Her home was always open to friends and family, and often even strangers. In 2010, Barbara moved back to the family home outside of Altamont with her husband. She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years; a daughter, Leanna and her husband, Brian Martin, of Oklahoma City; a son, David and his wife, Sarah, of Oklahoma City; and two brothers, John Herold and his wife, Rosadene, of Lakeville, Indiana; and Richard Herold and his wife, Alice, of Hemet, California. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law Joanna Brandon. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2013, at the Altamont First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Elston Cemetery near Altamont. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Friday, March 8, 2013, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. Memorials are suggested to Altamont First Baptist Church and Girl Scouts Western Oklahoma. These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 325, Altamont, KS 67330.
