Betty L. Van Dyne, 82, of rural Independence, passed away at 4:55 p.m., Monday, August 19, 2013 in the Emergency Room at the Mercy Hospital in Independence. She had been in failing health. She was born September 25, 1930 at Independence, Kansas to William L. and L. Gale (Fones) Scrivner. She grew up and attended schools in Independence and graduated from the Independence High School in 1949. She was united in marriage to John H. Van Dyne on December 24, 1950 at Independence, Kansas. Following their marriage, they lived in the Harmony Valley area east of Independence. She enjoyed crocheting, cross stitching and other handcrafts. She and her husband had also managed the Penn Terrace Apartments in Independence for five years. Betty was an active member of the Independence Church of the Nazarene and had taught Sunday School there for 60 years. She had taught her class the day before she passed away. She was also active in Senior Adult Ministries at the church. In the past she had been a part of Extension Home Units. Survivors include her husband, John, of the home; three sons, Sidney Van Dyne and his wife, Sheryl of rural Independence, Rodney Van Dyne and his wife, Toni of Ava, Missouri and Philip Van Dyne and his wife, Claudia of Springfield, Missouri; four daughters, Sara Cortner and her husband, Bud of Wichita, Kansas, Cary Tennis and her husband, Doug of Wilson, North Carolina, Rosa Acheson and her husband, David of Olathe, Kansas and Rita Laswell and her husband, Steve of Tulsa, Oklahoma; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one sister, Bonnie Crumpler of Abilene, Texas. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and a daughter-in-law, Tawnya Van Dyne. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 23, 2013 at the Independence Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at the Harmony Cemetery near the family home. The family will receive friends at the church from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday. Friends may call at the church after 1:00 p.m., Thursday.
