Alene B. Lucas, 91, a longtime resident of Altamont, Kansas, died at 3:10 p.m., Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at the Spring River Christian Village in Joplin, Missouri, where she had resided the past three months. She had made her home in Joplin, where she lived independently, for the past six years.
She was born May 21, 1916, in Guymon, Oklahoma, to Leroy and Susie Breithaupt. As a young girl, she attended Guymon Public Schools where she graduated from high school. She later earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Education from Panhandle A&M in Goodwell, Oklahoma, now known as Panhandle State University. She then did her graduate work at Pittsburg State University. She had also earned honors as an All-American in tennis and basketball while attending college.
She worked for one year as a secretary at the United States Naval Station in Newport, Rhode Island. She then began her 33 year teaching career where she taught for one year at the Altamont Grade School and 24 years at Labette County High School which included eight years as a physical education teacher and 16 years as an English teacher.
She and Roy J. Lucas were married August 4, 1937. He preceded her in death on January 19, 1974.
She was past president of the Altamont Grade School PTA, YWCA, Culture Club, and SEK District Teachers of English. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinal and OU football fan. By all who knew her, she was a classy lady and very impeccable in all aspects of her life. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death her daughter, Peggy Baker, five brothers and one sister.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 15, 2007, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. The casket will remain closed. Friends may call to sign the register at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont after 9:00 a.m., Friday.
