Alma I. Sprouse, 100, of Chetopa, passed away at 5:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Chetopa Manor Nursing Home.
She was born January 20, 1916 in Craig County, Oklahoma to William and Elsie (Bryant) Ingram. Alma grew up in the Welch area where she was a 1933 graduate of Welch High School. She continued her education by attending Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami where she earned a teaching certificate in 1936. In 1962, Alma earned a Bachelor's degree from Pittsburg State University.
She taught in the Northeast Oklahoma and Southeast Kansas areas for 37 years. The last 26 ½ years of her career were spent teaching mathematics at Chetopa Junior High until her retirement. In 1975, Alma was honored with the prestigious Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America award.
She was a former member of the Welch Christian Church and present member of the First Christian Church in Chetopa. Alma was an active member of the CWF (Christian Women's Fellowship), Retired Teachers Association, and the Chetopa Senior Citizens and held numerous offices in all of these organizations. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed gifting numerous items including quilts and denim jackets to family and friends through the years.
On December 24, 1937, she and Frank B. Sprouse were united in marriage in Miami, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on January 28, 1989.

Numerous Nieces and Nephews
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the First Christian Church in Chetopa. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time, on Saturday, at the church.
