Alvin Eugene Pontious, 71, of Pittsburg, formerly of Parsons, died at 7:51 p.m., Tuesday, October 25, 2011, at his home.
He was born March 29, 1940, in rural Cherryvale, Kansas, to Ira D. and Nellie May (Janssen) Pontious. He attended a one-room school in the Timber Hill area before moving with his family, at the age of 10, to Parsons where he attended Washington Elementary School and assisted in the neighborhood family grocery store, Pontious Market, by making deliveries.
Through the years, he lived at Parsons Good Samaritan Society from 1974 to September 1981, Living Skills Center in St. Paul to August 1985, Class Limited in Independence to April 1986, Class Limited in Pittsburg to July 1997, New Horizons in Pittsburg to August 2008, and New Hope Services in Pittsburg to the present.
In earlier years, he enjoyed fishing.

Loren L. Pontious and his daughter, Lucinda Comstock, and her children, Briana, Ashton, Gavin, Taryn and Taven Winfield, KS

Stepmother – Ann Pontious Parsons, KS

He was preceded in death by his mother, Nellie Pontious, January 31, 1965; and his father, Ira Pontious, October 30, 1976.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 28, 2011, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m., until service time Friday, at the funeral home.
