Ann F. Pontious

Ann F. Pontious, 99, of Parsons, died at 1:55 p.m., Sunday, February 17, 2013, at Elmhaven East Nursing Home in Parsons.

She was born December 14, 1913, in Parsons, Kansas, to John F. and Annie M. (Quirin) Journot. As a young girl, she grew up on a farm southwest of Parsons and was a graduate of Dennis High School. She then received nursing training at the Ft. Scott Hospital and Mercy Hospital in Parsons.

Through the years, she worked as a licensed practical nurse at Mercy Hospital, Labette County Medical Center, Presbyterian Manor and Heritage Nursing Home. She also worked as a private nurse in homes.

She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, now St. Patrick's and its Altar Society, the VFW Auxiliary and SCOOP. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting and embroidering. During World War II, she volunteered in the soup kitchen and, in later years, at St. Vincent DePaul Society and Meals on Wheels. For many years, Ann personally made meals and delivered them to shut-ins and had cared for numerous family members.

She and James "J.W." McElroy were married January 28, 1934. He preceded her in death in 1964. On August 6, 1966, she and Ira Pontious were married. He preceded her in death October 30, 1976.

Bill Journot, Barbara (Journot) Milks, Cynthia (Journot) VanLeeuwen, Clint Journot, JoAnn (Journot) Washburn and Jane (Journot) Kelsey

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Frank J. Journot, Eugene C. Journot, John P. Journot, George W. Journot and Richard L. Journot; three sisters, Ida Frayher, Mary L. Bauer and Pauline D. Stilley; an infant son, James Joseph McElroy; and a stepson, Alvin Pontious.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 21, 2013, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons where the family will receive friends immediately following the rosary.
