Anna Marie Martinez, 79, of Parsons and a life-long resident of Parsons and retired registered nurse, died at 12:55 p.m., Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the Elmhaven West Nursing Home where she had resided since January 2, 2003.
She was born August 6, 1923 in Parsons, a daughter of Guadalupe Lopez and Belen (Arroyo) Lopez. She attended McKinley Elementary School, West Junior High School and graduated from Parsons High School in 1942. She later graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. She was a registered nurse at the former Mercy Hospital from 1948 to 1958. In 1958, she was employed as a registered nurse at the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center, where she worked until retiring in 1985. After her retirement, she attended various senior citizens classes at the Labette Community College.
She was a member of the St. Patick's Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Parsons. She was a past member of the American Nursing Association.
She and Leonard Martinez were married July 5, 1952 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. They were later divorced.
Survivors include one son, Charles L. Martinez and his wife, Aimee of Walnut, Kansas; two grandchildren, Robert Martinez of Parsons and Cheyena Renae Martinez of Walnut, Kansas; two sisters, Josefina Lopez and Carmen Lopez, both of Parsons. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jose Lopez and two sisters, Consuelo Lopez and Luz Lopez.
Funeral Mass was held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 5, 2003 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Wachter officiating. Burial was at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery at Parsons. Memorial contributions were suggested to the St. Patrick's Catholic Church Building Fund.
