Arlene Y. Sweeney

Arlene Y. Sweeney, 81, of Parsons, died at 11:08 p.m., Saturday, May 25, 2013 in the Emergency Room at Labette Health.

She was born October 26, 1931 in Owensboro, Kentucky to Clarence Elmore Young and Pearl Catilda (Stratton) Young. She grew up near Owensboro and attended Daviess County High School.

She and Amos L. Sweeney were married on September 11, 1948 in Owensboro. They lived in rural Owensboro where she was employed by General Electric for many years until she retired. Mr. Sweeney preceded her in death on July 30, 2002. She then moved to Parsons, Kansas in 2003 to be near her son and his family.

She had been a member of the Walnut Memorial Baptist Church while living in Owensboro, and was current member of the First Baptist Church in Parsons where she had enjoyed singing in the choir. She had been a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Owensboro for many years. She loved spending time with her family. She also enjoyed traveling and playing the organ.

Survivors:
One son – Dan Sweeney and his wife Doris of Parsons
Three grandchildren: Shannon Otte and her husband Eric, Kelly Gorman and her husband Trenton, and Kevin Sweeney
Four great-grandchildren: Grady Gorman, Quin Gorman, Katelynn Otte, and Danielle Otte

She was preceded in death by a son, Lanny Sweeney, and three sisters.

Funeral Services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service. There will be a graveside service at 10:00 am, Friday, May 31, 2013 at the Memorial Garden Cemetery in Owensboro, Kentucky.

Memorials are suggested to either the Parsons Community Foundation or to the First Baptist Church. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
