Arthur A. "Marty" Martin, 67, of Erie, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2017 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
He was born August 21, 1949 in Springfield, Missouri, to Homer Ralph and Luanna (Noyes) Martin. He grew up in Independence, Kansas, where he attended school and graduated in 1967 from Independence High School where he excelled in sports, especially football and track. He then attended the University of Missouri on a football scholarship and later graduated from Pittsburg State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Parks and Recreation.
In 1972, he moved to Springfield, Missouri, where he worked for Springfield Parks and Recreation until returning to Erie in 1976. At that time, he joined his father-in-law in his business, Swan's Grocery Store, until 1983. He then worked as a salesman for Monsour's, Inc. in Pittsburg. For the past 30 years, he worked as an insurance agent for Shelter Insurance.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Erie where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He enjoyed being outdoors, caring for his lawn, cooking for family and friends, and was an avid KU Jayhawk fan. His greatest pleasure came when spending time with his family and being "Papa" to his five grandchildren.
He and Jill A. Swan were married December 30, 1972 at the First Christian Church in Erie. She survives of the home.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Mandy Adcock and her husband, Aaron, of Olathe, KS, and Marcy Riedel and her husband, Joe, of Shawnee, KS; five grandchildren, Noah Adcock, Aden Adcock, Reece Riedel, Joey Riedel and Reagan Ann Riedel; one brother, Gary Martin and his wife, Linda, of Strong City, KS; and one sister, Nancy Martin, of Aurora, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Luanna Martin; and one sister, Mary Martin.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, April 6, 2017, at the First Christian Church in Erie. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Erie. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the church. Friends may call at their convenience after 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, at the church.
