Barbara A. Gwartney, 64, of Chetopa, died at 9:15 p.m., Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Labette Health in Parsons. She had been in failing health.
She was born March 26, 1949 at Elkins, West Virginia to Allen Monroe Hyre and Jacqueline Rae (Daniels) Hyre. She grew up and attended schools in West Virginia until moving to Texas with her family. She graduated from the Travis High School in Austin, Texas.
She moved to Altamont in the early 1980s where she worked as a certified medication aide at the nursing home there. She later moved to Chetopa where she had lived since.
She was married to Charles Gwartney. They later divorced.
Survivors include:
Two Sons: Troy Hyre - of the home and Alan Myers of Brazoria, Texas; Two daughters, Jackie Wimp and her husband, Donald of Chetopa, Kansas and Tammy Wimp of Chetopa, Kansas; Three stepsons, Chuck Gwartney of Oklahoma and Doug and Shane Gwartney both of Parsons; Two stepdaughters, Hollie Austin and Ane Gwartney, both of Parsons; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; Three sisters, Terri Fowler and her husband, Ronald of Bloomington, Illinois, Patricia Botello and her husband, Fred of Austin, Texas and Beverly Jo Ellis and her husband, Charles of Walters, Oklahoma.
Following cremation a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, December 9, 2013 at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m., until service time and then following the service until 8:30 p.m., Monday.
