rural Mound Valley

Barbara Journot Milks, 68, of rural Mound Valley, Kansas, passed away from this life at 5:20 p.m, Friday, October 4, 2019 at her home following a courageous battle with ALS.

On March 27, 1951, Barbara was born to John and Henrietta (Paris) Journot in Parsons, Kansas. Barbara grew up in the rural Parsons area and attended Labette County schools, graduating from Labette County High School in 1969.

Upon graduation from high school she attended beauty school. She was a manicurist in Florida, where she and her husband, Warren, made their first home. The couple later moved back to Labette County, but frequently vacationed in Florida. After staying home with her children while they were small, Barbara was the custodian at Meadow View Grade School.   After retiring from the school, she was a beloved housekeeper for many years.

Barbara was a true artist. She worked with multiple mediums throughout the years, leaving behind a testament of her amazing talent in her paintings, watercolors and especially her quilts. She had exquisite attention to detail and won awards in every quilt show she entered. There was very little Barbara could not accomplish. An unvarnished one-of-a-kind woman, she was capable of working on cars and remodeling a house one minute to cooking wonderful meals and raising children the next.

She married Warren Milks of Parsons on August 29, 1969. He preceded her in death on January 25, 2016.

Survivors include:

Two daughters – Sarah McCray-Foster (Robert Foster) of Mound Valley, Kansas

Joanna Milks (Danial Smith) of Mound Valley, Kansas

One sister – Jo Ann Washburn of Asbury, Missouri

Eight grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Warren Milks, on January 25, 2016.

Taking great comfort in family and friends, Barbara asked that no services be held. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice.  These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, 405 Main, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
