Bernita Sparks, 81, of Altamont, died Friday, September 21, 2012, at her home. Her death was unexpected.
She was born September 23, 1930, in Chanute, Kansas, to August E. and Frances Annette (Nelson) Erickson. She grew up and attended schools both Savonburg and Stark, Kansas. She was a graduate of Stark High School and also graduated from Kansas City Secretarial School.
She owned and operated a daycare from her home for 44 years and had especially fond memories of the children she had cared for through the years. She attended the First Baptist Church in Altamont and enjoyed reading and playing the piano.
She and Melvin Howard Sparks were married June 24, 1950, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on December 7, 1996.

Michael Sparks Parsons, KS
David Wayne Sparks Nashville, TN
Two Daughters – Sharon Douglas and her husband, Tom Henderson, TX
Louise Searcy and her husband, Bill Munds Park, AZ
Fifteen Grandchildren
Numerous Great-Grandchildren and Great-Great-Grandchildren
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister and four children.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at the First Baptist Church in Altamont. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.
