Bertha B. Proffitt, 91, of Parsons, passed away at 6:45 a.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at Parsons Presbyterian Manor.
Bertha Beatrice Martin was born on November 16, 1928, to Leslie and Minnie (Humphrey) Martin in Green Forest, Arkansas. In the early 1940's, Bertha and her family moved to Parsons, where she grew up and attended school. As a young woman, she worked at Newberry's. She later worked at Broderick's, Fred Ronald Manufacturing and then as a nurse's aide at Good Samaritan Society.
In earlier years, she attended Westside Christian Church and more recently was attending the First Christian Church. She was a lifelong member of VFW Brown - Bishop Post 704 Auxiliary. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She also enjoyed growing flowers and cooking.
On November 16, 1946, Bertha and Robert T. Proffitt were married in Kansas City, Missouri. He preceded her in death on February 9, 1998.
Survivors include:
One son – Robert E. "Gene" Proffitt and his wife, Jeanne, of Golden, Missouri
One daughter – Melinda Miller and her husband, Robert, of Independence, Kansas
Three grandchildren
Six, soon to be seven, great grandchildren
One great-great grandchild
One brother – William "Bill" Martin of Winamac, Indiana
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert T. Proffitt, on February 9, 1998; her parents; two brothers and two sisters.
There will be a graveside service 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 19 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Dennis. The family will receive friends 7 – 8:00 p.m., Monday, May 18 at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church of Parsons or the VFW Brown – Bishop, Post 704 Auxiliary. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
