Betty J. Denney

Betty J. Denney, 86, of Parsons, died at 3:25 a.m., Thursday, June 13, 2013 at Elm Haven East Nursing Home in Parsons. She was born August 27, 1926, in Thayer, Kansas to George Lewis and Lila Irene (Peterson) Hastings. She grew up and attended school in Thayer and later earned a teaching certificate at Kansas State Teacher's College in Pittsburg. For a time, she taught in a country school near Thayer. On April 28, 1944 she and Everett Ray Denney were married in Fredonia, Kansas. Following marriage, they lived in rural Altoona and later rural Thayer where they farmed. In 1970, they moved to Independence, Missouri. He preceded her in death on November 25, 1988. In 1990, she returned to Thayer and for a time lived in Altamont. She then was a resident at Woodridge Estates and most recently Elm Haven East Nursing Home, both in Parsons. She was an active member of Thayer Christian Church. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, decorating wedding cakes and playing the piano for church and school events. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include: One Son – Jerry L. Denney and wife, Tammy Cimarron, KS One Daughter – Linda Rucker and husband, John Rural Parsons, KS Eight Grandchildren Nineteen Great-Grandchildren One Brother – Robert Hastings and wife, Donna Modesto, CA One Sister – Katherine Tuchalski Groveland, CA In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 17, 2013 at the Thayer Christian Church. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery near Thayer. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Sunday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Memorials are suggested to Thayer Christian Church Pre-School.
