Carl H. Longan

Carl H. Longan, 88, of Altamont, a former resident of Springfield, Missouri, died at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 6, 2007 at the Labette County Medical Center in Parsons.

He was born November 15, 1918 in Texarkana, Arkansas to Clyde Henry Longan and Jettie Lee (Bonner) Longan. He grew up on the family farm. In 1941, he moved to Carthage, Missouri and worked in a grocery store. Later that same year, he joined the United States Army. During World War II he served as Staff Sergeant with a medical detachment in the Pacific War Theater. During the war, he earned a Bronze Star and several other medals. Upon his discharge on August 29, 1945, he returned to Springfield, Missouri. He had worked for Hoffman Pest Control in Springfield for 42 years. Following retirement he worked as a school crossing guard. He was a charter member of the South Haven Baptist Church. He enjoyed boating, hunting, fishing and traveling.

He and Fay Pearl West were married on May 22, 1942 in Houston, Missouri. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, 510 S. Wabash, in Altamont.
