Celia E. Thomas, 96, of Oswego, Kansas, died at 6:45 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2010, at Oswego Nursing and Rehab Center.


She was born September 17, 1913, in Evergreen, Texas, to Rubin and Celia L.E. (Mullinax) Martin. As a young girl, she attended schools in both Evergreen and Baytown, Texas.


She and her husband, John E. Thomas, lived in Texas City and later, Houston, where she worked as a grocery checker, clerk in a variety store, and until the age of 70 in a hardware store. Following retirement, she returned to Evergreen, then moved to Cleveland, Texas, before moving to Kansas 18 years ago to be near family.

She was a member of the Church of Christ in Evergreen and had attended the Friendship Friends Church near Hallowell, Kansas. She enjoyed fishing, quilting, reading, playing board games and dominoes.

Survivors include:
One Son – Johnny Thomas Conroe, TX
One Daughter – Maye Orem Oswego, KS
Fifteen Grandchildren
Twenty-Three Great-Grandchildren
Three Great-Great-Grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas, in December 1972; six brothers, one sister and two daughters.
