Charles D. Burns, 93, of Erie, died at 7:50 p.m., Monday, July 7, 2008, at Prairie Mission Retirement Village, in St. Paul, where he had resided since March of this year.
He was born June 4, 1915, in Walnut, Kansas, to Clarence and Leona (Mudd) Burns. He grew up and attended schools there graduating from Walnut High School in 1933.
He served in the United States Army during World War II, from 1942-1945, in the 71st Signal Company, as a radio operator in North Africa, Europe and the Philippines, was a member of shore parties in landing operations, and sent shore-to-ship messages in code. He also worked in the 5th Army Headquarters receiving and coordinating requests for artillery and air support for front-line troops. Upon his discharge from the Army, he was awarded the Pre-Pearl Harbor ribbon, the European, African, Middle Eastern ribbon with 5 bronze stars, the Asiatic Pacific ribbon with one bronze star, the Philippine Liberation ribbon and the Good Conduct ribbon.
For a time, he drove a truck for Swift and Company before returning to the farm where he raised stock cattle and diversified crops, and was a dairy farmer.
He and Agnes E. Marnell were married February 16, 1942, in Walnut. She preceded him in death May 29, 2008.
He was an active member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie and especially enjoyed being involved in church activities there. He was also a member of the American Legion in Erie and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Chanute.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death one brother, Gillman Burns in January 1972, and one great-grandson, Heath.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 10, 2008, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Erie. Burial will be in Ft. Scott National Cemetery with military honors given by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. The Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the Rosary in Parish Hall.
