Charles Joseph Forbes, 81, of Parsons, died at 5:40 a.m., Monday, August 21, 2006, at the Labette County Medical Center in Parsons.
He was born November 8, 1924 to Patrick J. and Mary E. (McNerney) Forbes in Parsons, Kansas. He attended St. Patrick's Grade School, Parsons Jr. High and graduated from Parsons Sr. High School in May 1942. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army from July 1943 to January 31, 1946. He spent two years in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. In 1950, he worked at the Main Recruiting and Induction Center in Kansas City during the Korean War. In 1956 he attended Advanced Army Administrative School at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. He remained in the Army Reserves for several years thereafter.
He worked for the MKT Railroad as Consolidated Agent retiring on May 31, 1987, following 45 years of service. He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons, a charter member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Brotherhood of Railway Clerks, NARVRE and AARP.
His hobbies included fishing and gardening. He spent many hours doing research for the Katy Parsons Memorial Roster. He enjoyed his grandchildren immensely and was an avid spectator of their sporting events.
On December 1, 1956 he married Gertrude Van Leeuwen at the St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. They later purchased the home he was raised in at 1812 Stevens in Parsons which had been in his family for 75 years. Gertrude preceded him in death on September 7, 1993.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers; William, John, Emmett and Gene Forbes, four sisters; Agnes Forbes, Mary Alice Maxwell, Anne Coyle and Ilene Molloy, and one grandson, Matt Moore.
Funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 24, 2006 at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parsons with military honors given by Brown-Bishop Post No. 704 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. The family will receive friends following the rosary.
