Christopher J. "Chris" Mattox, 59, of rural Mound Valley passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, at his home.

Christopher Joe Mattox was born on August 11, 1961, to Bobbie J. and Barbara A. (Hayden) Mattox in Chanute, Kansas. He and his family lived in Fredonia and he attended grade school in Mound Valley. In 1979, he graduated from Labette County High School.

Following high school, he settled in the Mound Valley area, where he had lived since. He worked as a truck driver for a private trucking company. He enjoyed tinkering and fixing things.

He and Marcia Barrager were married. The couple later divorced.

Survivors include:

One daughter – Kimberly Maxson and her husband, Tracy, of Coffeyville, Kansas

Three grandchildren

His mother – Barbara Mattox of Mound Valley, Kansas

Two brothers – Corey Mattox of Mound Valley, Kansas

Craig Berkenmeier of Lafayette, Louisiana

Three sisters – Carla June Barr of Emporia, Kansas

Connie Gannon of Mansfield, Louisiana

Mary Jo Morgan of Vinita, Oklahoma

He was preceded in death by his father, Bob Mattox; one brother, Stanley Mattox; and one sister, Elizabeth Pittman.

There will be a graveside service at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 22, 2021, at the Mound Valley Cemetery. The service can be viewed live on the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home Facebook page. For all events, social distancing guidelines will be followed, including the requirement of face masks.

Memorials are suggested to the Western Way Cowboy Church. These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
