Corporal Daniel L. Cox, 23, of Parsons, was killed in action on Saturday, September 12, 2009, while serving the United States of America in Wardak province, Afghanistan.

He was born July 19, 1986, in Winfield, Kansas, to Kim B. and Sharon J. (West) Cox. He grew up and attended school in Winfield, and at the age of 12, moved with his family to Parsons where he was a 2005 graduate of Parsons High School. He enjoyed four-wheeling, fishing, old trucks and cars, and tinkering. He loved football and had participated in the sport from Pee Wee league through high school. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He joined the U.S. Army in June 2005 and had been stationed at Fort Drum, New York, since October 2005. He was a member of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, and was currently serving as infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, which deployed in January 2009. This was his second deployment. He had been awarded the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Purple Heart.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, September 21, 2009, at the Parsons Municipal Auditorium. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Parsons. The family will receive friends from 3-5:00 p.m., Sunday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
