David Ashby, Sr.

April 19, 1940 — February 9, 2008

David Ashby, Sr., 67, of rural Oswego, died at 12:33 p.m., Saturday, February 9, 2008, in the Emergency Room at Labette Health. He had been in his usual health and death was not expected.

He was born April 19, 1940, in Saint George, West Virginia, to Cecil and Frances (King) Ashby. As a young boy, he grew up and attended schools in Saint George.

In 1959, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. For a time, he was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland as a member of the Presidential Squadron. In 1979, he retired as a technical sergeant from the U.S. Air Force after having served his country 20 years. Following retirement, he worked in aviation where he had the opportunity to travel to numerous cities, both inside and outside of the United States. In the fall of 1999, following his second retirement, he moved to rural Oswego where he has resided since.

He and Patricia Ann Donald were married October 27, 1972, in Clinton, Maryland. She survives of the home.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altamont where he served as lay minister, deacon and was instrumental in starting AWANA Ministries. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in West Virginia.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one grandson.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at the First Baptist Church in Altamont. Burial will be in the Ft. Scott National Cemetery with military honors given by the Whiteman Air Force Base Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 12, 2008, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.
