Dennis Steig

Dennis Steig, 79, of rural Cherryvale, passed away at 4:12 p.m., Monday, December 19, 2016 at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.

He was born July 21, 1937 in Butte, North Dakota to William and Barbara (Kleingartner) Steig. He grew up and attended school in the Butte area where he graduated in 1956 from Butte High School.

He entered the United States Army in November of 1956. Following his honorable discharge in 1959, he lived in Tulsa where he worked as a stone mason, did window washing of skyscrapers, and traveled extensively across the country laying marble. He then lived in Collinsville, Oklahoma where he had a dairy and farmed. In 1975, he moved to rural Cherryvale where he continued dairying and was employed by Dayton Superior in Parsons for 27 years until retiring at the age of 65.

He was a 27-year member of Local Lodge #293 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. He also served on his local rural water board for several years. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and being a 4-H leader in earlier years. Dennis especially enjoyed the countless hours he spent helping to rebuild Mt. Zion Community Church.

He and Elizabeth Ellen Benight were married December 24, 1959 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She survives of the home.

Two Daughters – Denise Steig Norman, OK
Becky May and her companion, Zach McDaniel Frontenac, KS
Nine Grandchildren
Two Great-Granddaughters
One Brother – Leonard Steig and his wife, Carol Butte, ND

He was preceded in death by six brothers, three sisters, and one daughter, Amy Steig, on July 26, 2013.

Following cremation, the family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Monday, December 26, 2016 at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons with military honors given by Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars, at 7:30 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the KU Endowment Fund (for the Landon Center on Aging at the University of Kansas Medical Center). These may be left at or mailed to Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 374, Parsons, KS 67357.
