Donald Allen Blackledge, 71, of Chetopa, Kansas, died at 8:50 p.m., Monday, May 12, 2008, at Labette Health in Parsons, Kansas. He had been in failing health.

He was born June 3, 1936, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Merle Dale and Martha Lucille (Duncan) Blackledge. He moved to Chetopa at the age of five. He grew up and attended school there, graduating from Chetopa High School in 1954.

He worked for his father at B & D Motors in Chetopa as an auto mechanic and drove a school bus for the Chetopa School District for a number of years. He also worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant, Patch Coal Mines in Welch, Oklahoma, and Labette County Highway Department. He served as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves.

He was a member of the Chetopa Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Chetopa Volunteer Fire Department and served on the Chetopa City Council from 2003-2007. He enjoyed sports, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

He and Barbara Stapleton were married August 21, 1955, at Faulkner, Kansas. They had four daughters. They later divorced. He and Peggy (Palmer) Carrell were married January 16, 1971. They later divorced.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Kenneth Blackledge.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Chetopa. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
