Donald R. "Don" Denney, 86, of Parsons, died at 10:32 p.m., Thursday, August 6, 2009, at the Good Samaritan Society in Parsons.
He was born December 1, 1922, in Seymour, Missouri, to Ernest and Sallie (Day) Denney. As a young boy, he grew up and attended schools in Seymour. He then moved to Parsons in December 1941 before being drafted during World War II into the U.S. Army where he served in Germany.
Following his discharge, he returned to Parsons where he worked at Ankortite, the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant, and the Parsons State Hospital & Training Center as an aide. For a time, he also worked as a truck driver for Hound Dawg, delivered trailers for Scotsman Industries in Oswego, and in 1966 returned to the Parsons State Hospital & Training Center until retiring in 1984. Following retirement, he considered it an honor to have served as guardian for many residents from the Parsons State Hospital & Training Center.
He was a member of the Friendship Southern Baptist Church in Parsons where he was a founding member, served as a deacon, was past president of the "Brotherhood" men's group, and in earlier years also served as leader of the Royal Ambassadors. He was a life member of Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the National Rifle Association.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, reading and raising hunting dogs. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He and Maybelle Grace Stuart were married December 27, 1942, in the First Baptist Church in Mound Valley, Kansas. She survives.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters, one son, Daniel Denney; and one daughter, Candice Jones.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 10, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Parsons. The family will hold private funeral services with burial in Oakwood Cemetery prior to the memorial service. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m., Sunday, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home.
