Donna Lee Kline, 92, longtime resident of Mound Valley, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at Elmhaven Nursing Home in Parsons.
She was born on June 14, 1927, to Abe and Flora (Board) Dick in Newton, Kansas. She grew up in Newton and attended schools there. As a teenager, she worked at Charleston Market Deli in Newton and Ben Franklin stores after moving to Wichita.
At a dance she met her future husband, Raymond Kline. They were married on August 5, 1945, in Newton, Kansas. They moved to Mound Valley in 1946 to help operate the Kline Hardware Store. In 1959, she began working at Automotive Controls in Independence, and retired from there in 1987. Throughout the years, Donna and Raymond owned Kline Home Appliance, Kline Car Wash, the laundromat and bowling alley in Mound Valley.
A woman of quiet intelligence, Donna earned her G.E.D at the age of 69. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren and family. As a treat for Christmas, she would make peppernuts, which was a part of her Mennonite heritage. She also enjoyed making quilts, swimming and traveling. Traveling was something Donna and Raymond loved doing. The couple had visited all 50 states, drove a camper all the way to Alaska, and spent 12 winters in Yuma, Arizona.
For over 70 years, Donna was a member of the Mound Valley United Methodist Church. She was also active in the Mound Valley Historical Society.
