Doris Francis Morton Proctor, born September 19, 1921 in Commerce, Oklahoma died Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at the age of 99.
Doris was raised in Commerce with her three sisters and three brothers. She graduated from Commerce High School. She met her husband, Joe Proctor, in 1939 at a youth church event. They were married in 1940 and had two daughters, Jolene (Harper) and Connie (Abbott). During WWII, she was employed with the war efforts as a "Rosie the Riveter".
In 1948, Doris and Joe moved from Commerce, Oklahoma, to Mound Valley, Kansas, where they raised their girls. Joe managed the local one-man lumber yard and Doris worked for Kansas State University Southeast Experiment Station until their retirement in 1986.
In 1955, Joe and Doris began a lifelong love of Ely, Minnesota, and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. They spent every summer with family and friends for over 50 years on the East Arm shores of Burntside Lake.
A lifelong Methodist, she has kept her membership of 70 plus years at her home church in Mound Valley Kansas, where she and all members of the community physically built the current church in the late 1950's. Since her move to the Dallas area, she has been an active attendant at Spring Valley United Methodist Church.
Doris's specialty was cooking. She never made just one pie at a time; she made 4 to 6 of the best in the area. She was a participant and member in Lions Club, Masonic and Eastern Star meetings, church activities, booster club, church youth leader, 4-H Clubs, school organizations and youth sport teams. She was an avid card player throughout her years in clubs for bridge and pinochle. Doris enjoyed many family card games, always willing to teach her grandchildren and great grandchildren how to play and make the perfect shuffle. Doris also loved trying her luck at casinos even into her late nineties.
In the 20 years of retirement together, Doris and Joe loved to travel – New York and Texas to see grandkids and great grandkids, Minnesota to fish and cook, Florida in winter to visit family and Las Vegas. Their favorite vacations were taking their five granddaughters on cross-country road trips that included Disney World and Disneyland, and college graduation trips to Vegas, all which helped instill a love of travel in their grandchildren.
In 2015, Doris moved into the Appletree Court Assisted Living facility in Richardson Texas where she kept busy with friends, cards, bingo, and Bible Study. Since September 2019, she has been at The Reserve at Richardson, a skilled nursing facility.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe D. Proctor; her parents, Harvey Allen Morton & Norma Agnes Taylor Morton; her sisters and brothers Eloise Kitto, Thelma Shirley, Norma Jean Nunn, Claude Morton, Beverly Morton and Ray Morton.
She is survived by her daughters, Jolene Harper of Richardson, Texas, and Connie Abbott of Slingerlands, New York; five granddaughters, Micki Wright (Bob) of Garland, Texas; Teri Harper (David) of Dallas, Texas; Staci Smith (Russell) of Aledo, Texas; Karen Moorby (Allen) of Delmar, New York; Kathy Velasco (Ray) of Amsterdam, New York.; six great-grandchildren: Victoria and Abigail Wright, Harper and Samantha Smith, Andrew Velasco, and Jack Moorby; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
