Dorothy P. Abshier

Dorothy P. Abshier, 92, of Afton, Oklahoma, formerly of Parsons, Kansas, died at 6:10 p.m., Thursday, July 19, 2012, at Craig General Hospital in Vinita, Oklahoma. She was born December 13, 1919, in rural Mound Valley, Kansas to Elmer and Mary (Estabrook) Hoppock. As a young girl, she grew up in the Bartlett and Angola areas and was a graduate of Labette County Community High School in Altamont. She and Wayne Leroy "Roy"Abshier were married January 12, 1939. While her husband was serving during World War II, she lived in Mound Valley, Kansas, with her sons and sister. While living in Mound Valley, she worked as a teacher's aide and was one of the early volunteers to help create the preschool children's church care programs in Parsons. In 1945, the family moved to Parsons where they lived until moving to Grand Lake in 1987. Through the years, she was very active in scouting and church programs with her sons. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Parsons where she served as a Sunday school teacher numerous years. She was constantly a caregiver and support to her family members and friends in times of illness and hardship. She especially enjoyed traveling, flower gardening, babysitting, photography and spending time with her family. Survivors include: Two Sons – Marlin Gail Abshier and his wife, Clova North Ft. Myers, FL Ronald Dean Abshier and his wife, Linda Bluffton, TX Six Grandchildren Four Step-Grandchildren Ten Great-Grandchildren Eleven Step-Great-Grandchildren Fifteen Great-Great-Step-Grandchildren Numerous Cousins, Nieces and Nephews She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, "Roy" Abshier, in 2001; four brothers, Kenneth, Wayne, Dale and Eldon Hoppock; four sisters, Estella Joyce Hoppock, Mary Lavina Hoppock, Minta Maxine Shufelt, and Thelma Louise Stevenson; and three infant great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. Burial will be in Oswego Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to PALS (Proud Animals Lovers Shelter).
