Dorothy J. Hernandez, 79, of Lubbock, Texas, and formerly of Parsons, Kansas, passed away at 4:21 p.m., Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at the University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.
She was born December 8, 1938 in Mountain Home, Arkansas to James W. and Helen L. (Harris) Henson. As a young girl, she moved with her family to the Big Island in St. Paul, Kansas where she attended a country school and later attended Labette County Community High School in Altamont.
Through the years, Dorothy worked at various businesses in Parsons including Adventure Line Manufacturing Company, Gibson's, Consumer's, Walmart, Convenient Food Mart, and most recently as a production line worker for 12 years at Ruskin Manufacturing Company until retiring.
She was a former member of the Friendship Southern Baptist Church in Parsons. Dorothy enjoyed cooking for her family, attending her children's and grandchildren's activities, camping, fishing, and traveling in her fifth wheel. She especially enjoyed shopping for a bargain and watching her beloved St. Louis Cardinals.
On September 3, 1954, she and Edward Hernandez were married at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. They later divorced.

Twelve Grandchildren – Bridget Hernandez, DeAnna Hernandez, Brian Handshy, Jr. and his fiancé, Annie, Adam Handshy and wife, Anna, Ysonde Gonzales and her husband, E.J., Ian Handshy and his wife, Lauren, Ashley Dunlap and her husband, Dane, Darien Hernandez, Nathan Hall, Haleigh Simmons and her husband, Kevin, Bret Kernell and his wife, Candace, and Jensen Christian and her husband, Brody

She was preceded in death by one brother, James Henson, and an infant daughter, DeAnna Hernandez.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parsons. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Saturday at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
