Earl Nickel, 72, of Chetopa, passed away at 4:49 p.m., Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.
He was born December 30, 1943 to George Frank and Elsie Marie (Curnutte) Nickel on the family farm in rural Labette County, Kansas. He grew up and attended schools in Labette County and was a 1963 graduate of Labette County Community High School in Altamont.
For 29 years, Earl worked for Labette County as a road grader operator until his retirement. Through the years, he also farmed and did construction work.
He was a member of the Community Bible Church in Chetopa. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, hunting, gardening, and working with his hands.
He and Velma L. Burrows were married September 1, 1963. They later divorced. On February 14, 1981, the couple remarried. She survives.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at the Community Bible Church in Chetopa. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Monday, at the Community Bible Church in Chetopa.
