Edwin H. Smith, 93, longtime Chetopa businessman, died at 10:15 a.m., Monday, February 20, 2012, at Chetopa Manor Nursing Home.
He was born October 23, 1918 in Locust Grove, Oklahoma to William Aubrey and Dora Mae (Morehead) Smith. As a young boy, he grew up and attended elementary schools in Locust Grove and Alluwe, Oklahoma, and graduated high school in Chelsea, Oklahoma.
He served in the United States Army during World War II in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he attended watch-making school in Kansas City and gemology school in Los Angeles. For numerous years he owned and operated Smith's Jewelry Store in Chetopa.
He was a member of the First Christian Church in Chetopa where he served as deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher. He also ministered at Chetopa Manor. He enjoyed playing checkers, throwing horseshoes and bowling. Through the years, he had entered numerous horseshoe competitions and had sponsored Smith's Jewelry bowling league team.
He and Betty Grace Botonis were married in April of 1946 in Wichita. They later divorced. She survives.

Five Grandchildren – Miranda Hall, Christopher Rauscher, Sierra Nettles, Steven Smith and Izak Smith
One Great-Grandson – Dylan Hall
He was preceded in death by one brother, George Smith; and one sister, Ava Kerby.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 24, 2012 at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa. Burial will be in Lake Creek Cemetery near Bartlett. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.
