On August 24, 1921, a baby girl was born to Elza and Ruby (Hindman) Wolfe. They named her Eileen Betty. She was their first child so she was their only pride and joy for four years until another little girl was born into the family named Alice. Eileen has told that when she asked Jesus into her heart as a young lady, he give her a real love for her little sister. Even though Eileen and Alice lived many miles apart most of their lives, many letters, calls and visits kept them close in heart. Eileen's sister and husband, Alice and Walter Miller, live in Ewing, Nebraska.
Eileen lived on a farm in the sand hills near Ericson, Nebraska and went to school there. It was a 2 ½ mile walk to school and she walked there in all kinds of weather. She told of one morning she walked to school when it was 32 degrees below 0. Her father would not have allowed her to walk if he had realized it was that cold. For a time after she graduated from high school, she worked at the Ericson Stockyards as a secretary. As a girl, in the summer time she spent many hours in the hay fields helping her Dad.
On Sunday morning April 9, 1944, during the Sunday School hour in a Free Methodist church in Ericson, Nebraska, she married Paul William Johnson. The church had an upstairs and she has told us she went up that morning "a Wolfe" and came down "a Johnson". Paul and Eileen came back to his farm near Mound Valley, Kansas, and lived together for 50 years until Paul was taken to heaven on January 25, 1995.
What excitement came to their home when Duane LeRoy entered their lives on June 10, 1947. Eileen put most of her energy and prayers into raising her son to live for God. Whatever Duane was doing from childhood to adulthood she was very interested in. She played ball with him until he got older and then his Dad took over. She was a wonderful cook and tried to fix exactly what she knew he liked. On Saturday night, June 28, 1969, Nancy Luelf became their daughter when she married Duane. From the beginning she was taken in with loving arms so she never knew what is was like to have in-law problems.
What pleasure to be called "Grandma" by Sonya Gayle and Melinda LeAnne. Again she gave all her time and energy to her "Grandgirls" when they came to visit. When they were babies it would always take Nancy a few days to unspoil them after a visit to Grandma's house. As they grew older what fun it was to help Grandma cook, wash dishes and play house on the front porch. They always seemed to have Grandma's full attention. In time, her little girls grew up and married so then she had two grandsons. Gary Seniva married Sonya Gayle and they live in North Pole, Alaska. John W. Davolt married Melinda LeAnne and they live in Independence, Kansas.
There was still more joy to come in being Great Grandma to Donovan Gary Seniva, Lathan Paul Seniva, Cassidy Gayle Seniva and Tryke Wesley Duane Davolt. Her attention carried on to these little ones. She would play with them every chance she got. Even in the last few weeks, she would have a smile for Tryke.
Eileen attended the Free Methodist Church in Nebraska and after marriage the Free Methodist Church in Mound Valley, Kansas. After the Free Methodist Church closed, she attended the Bible Holiness Church in Cherryvale, Kansas and Altamont, Kansas. She was a member of the Altamont Holiness Church. Living for Christ, just the way he wanted her to live, was the most important part of her life. She used her God given talents to sing special songs at church and fix wonderful meals for her family and friends. For many years she also did a good job of teaching primary age children in Sunday School. One vivid memory we have is one time at church she began to feel God's presence and walked back and forth in front of the church praising God. She was holding baby Melinda on her shoulder and Melinda thought she was having a wonderful trip. What a wonderful heritage Eileen has left behind for her family!
Her life ended here on earth at her home in Mound Valley, Kansas, on June 5, 2011. She stepped from suffering and pain to glorious fullness of life.
