Elizabeth "Betty" Schettler

May 10, 1941 — February 20, 2022

Parsons

Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Schettler, 80, of Parsons went to be with the Lord Sunday morning, February 20, 2022 at Labette Health.  Her death was unexpected.

Betty was born on May 10, 1941, in rural Erie, to Leonard Eugene and Frances Elizabeth (Coomes) Fowler.  Betty moved with her family to Parsons in 1942, where she grew up, attended St. Patrick Catholic School, and was a 1959 graduate of St. Patrick Catholic High School.

Following high school, Betty attended Kansas State College of Pittsburg (now PSU).  She graduated from Mt. Carmel School of Nursing in Pittsburg in 1962.  After graduation, she worked at Mercy Hospital in Independence.  In 1964, Betty became employed at Labette County Medical Center (Labette Health).  Betty was a registered nurse for 36 years, retiring in 1998.  She was deeply passionate about nursing; always dedicated to providing quality care to her patients.  Betty retired early to care for her parents, especially her mother who had become blind.  Betty planned to return to the nursing profession upon her parents' passing, but she was unable to fulfill that dream due to her own failing eyesight.

On June 1, 1968, Elizabeth Ann Fowler and John H. Schettler were united in marriage at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parsons.  Her husband, John, survives of the home.

Betty was a lifelong member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society, and Daughters of Isabella.  In earlier years, she was an usher, sang in the church choir, delivered Stella Wells Christmas food baskets, volunteered at the Free Community Health Clinic, and taught cooking classes to 4H members. She especially enjoyed her time volunteering at St. Vincent De Paul Society and delivering Meals On Wheels with her husband.

Betty loved to do ceramics, tend to her flowers, camping, boating, and watching college basketball, especially during March Madness.  She loved animals and they had many on the farm.  You could often find Betty doing word searches while listening to classic Country and 50's music.

She and her husband loved to travel.  They felt very blessed to have visited all 50 states and many foreign countries, including Canada, Italy, Mexico, China, Ireland, Nova Scotia, Central and South America, and the Western Caribbean.

She enjoyed watching her children grow and was so proud of the adults they have become.  She was greatly interested in the lives of her seven grandchildren and looked forward to watching them grow and change in the future.  She loved attending their activities and sporting events.  Betty often said, "I am so blessed to have lived a life so full of love, joy and an amazing family".
