Ella May(Steeby) Palmer

Ella May (Steeby) Palmer, 104, of Altamont, died at 6:51 p.m., Friday, September 14, 2007, at the Labette Health Emergency Room.

She was born January 1, 1903, in Savannah, Missouri, to John S. and Mattie (Hardin) Steeby. She moved with her parents to Labette County in 1908. She graduated from Labette County Community High School in 1922 and continued her education at Pittsburg College where she received a life certificate in education in 1925. She taught at several rural schools, including Belleville, Catalpa, Elston, Prairie Valley, Twin Mound and Franklin. She was also employed by the Dr. Nichols Sanatorium Cancer Clinic in Savannah, Missouri for 20 years.

She and Ancel Gilbert were married on February 22, 1923. He preceded her in death on February 19, 1925. She and Forrest Palmer were married January 20, 1958. He preceded her in death on July 26, 1969. Mr. and Mrs. Palmer lived on a farm Northeast of Altamont that was originally owned by her parents.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, canning and genealogy.

She was a member of Spring Hill Church, and most recently, the United Methodist Church in Altamont.

She was preceded in death by five brothers, Kay, Carl, John, Ammon and Robert Steeby; and six sisters, Pearl Pyles, Etta Harris, Mary "Lizzie" Ellis, Malena Palmer, Blanche Wise and Ruby Ellison.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 18, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Altamont. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Monday, September 17, 2007, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.
