Elva Ohdean Meadows

Elva OhDean Meadows, 87, of Chetopa, died at 10:10 p.m., Sunday, April 24, 2011, at Chetopa Manor. She had been in failing health.

She was born December 22, 1923, near Mulberry, Arkansas, to Henry Clay and Estella Josephine (Root) McGaugh. As a young child, her family lived in Western Kansas and later moved to Coyville, Kansas where she graduated from high school. She then moved to Wichita where she worked at Kressge's Department Store and later in the cafeteria at Beechcraft.

On September 17, 1942, she married Harry L. "Shorty" Meadows in Reno, Nevada. While he was serving during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps in China, she lived with family in California. Upon his discharge, they lived in Fredonia and Oswego before moving to Chetopa where they owned and operated Meadows Auto Body where she worked as bookkeeper. In 1971, they moved to South Coffeyville, Oklahoma, where they owned and operated South Town Auto Salvage where she worked as bookkeeper. She also worked as a nurse's aide at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. Upon retirement, they moved to Flint Ridge, Oklahoma, where they built a new home and lived seven years before returning to Chetopa in 1998.

She was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Chetopa. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, decorating, fishing, painting, playing the guitar, and spending time with family and friends.

Three Daughters – Gloria Meadows Joplin, MO
Linda Guinn and husband, Bill Coffeyville, KS
Deanna Meadows and Bill Mankin Chetopa, KS
Sixteen Grandchildren
Numerous Great and Great-Great-Grandchildren
One Brother – Don McGaugh Tucson, AZ
One Sister – Kathryn McGaugh Bartlesville, OK

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Meadows, on July 12, 2007; four brothers and two granddaughters.


Private graveside services will be held with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa.
