Fay Longan, 88, of Altamont, died at 5:30 p.m., Monday, July 4, 2011, at Elmhaven West Nursing Home in Parsons.
She was born October 1, 1922, the first born of three children to George Lee West and Hilda Alice (Covington) West in Florence, Kansas. Fay's father, George, died from injuries sustained an automobile accident in 1929 leaving the young family. Fay's mom remarried in 1932 and the family moved numerous times living near the towns of Licking, Houston and Verona, Missouri.
It was while living in Houston, Missouri, that Fay met Carl Longan who was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. After a brief courtship, they were married May 22, 1942. Their son, Clyde Lee Longan, was born March 8, 1943, in Springfield, Missouri. During the war years, Fay and Clyde lived with Fay's mother and grandmother in Springfield. Carl was discharged from the Army on August 29, 1945, and returned to Springfield, Missouri, where he and Fay purchased a home. Fay was a devoted friend and helpmate for Carl and an attentive mom to Clyde. She was a patient grandmother and leaves her grandchildren with many fond memories.
Carl, Fay and Clyde were charter members of South Haven Baptist Church in Springfield. Fay was a Sunday school teacher and choir member there for many years. For several years, Fay worked part-time at the Lakeshore Ben Franklin 5 & 10 store located on south Campbell. Carl and Fay lived over 40 years at 610 West Crestview in Springfield and were well known by their friends and neighbors. In 2006, Fay and Carl moved from Springfield to Altamont, Kansas, to be near their son, Clyde, and his family.

She was preceded in death by her father, George Lee West; mother, Hilda Alice Jones; and husband, Carl Herbert Longan, January 6, 2007.
The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m., Friday, July 8, 2011, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. Following the visitation, family and friends will go in procession at 2:00 p.m. to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont for graveside services.
