Floyd R. Horton, 88, of Parsons, died at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Labette Health in Parsons.
He was born January 5, 1924, in St. Paul, Kansas to Julius A. and Della Mae (Spoonamore) Horton. He grew up and attended schools in St. Paul and was a 1942 graduate of St. Paul High School. While attending high school, he was basketball team captain four years and was also named Outstanding Athlete of the Year.
On July 1, 1944, he and Rita M. Johnston were married in the historic Mission San Fernando in California. During World War II, he entered the United States Marine Corps where he served in the Southern Pacific in marine aviation. Upon his honorable discharge, he worked for a short time at Ankortite Products in Parsons prior to beginning his 30-plus year career with Southwestern Bell where he retired in 1983. Floyd had been awarded the Theodore Vail Medal for his bravery in the rescue of flood victims. The medal has been awarded through the years to individuals for noteworthy acts reflecting the Bell System's traditions of loyalty and devotion to duty.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars; the Southwestern Bell Pioneers and the Bean Town Ramblers RV Club. He enjoyed gardening, was an avid KU Jayhawk and Parsons High School Viking basketball fan, and in earlier years was also a proud supporter of St. Patrick's Catholic School athletics.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters including his twin brother, Lloyd; one son, Tom Horton, on March 22, 1997; and one grandson, Eli Horton.
The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 19, 2012, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Parsons. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with military honors given by Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m., Sunday, at the church. The family will receive friends immediately following the rosary at the church.
