Francis M. Chenoweth

July 18, 1916 — August 1, 2006

Francis Marion Chenoweth, 90, of rural Parsons, passed away at 1:07 a.m., Tuesday, August 1, 2006, at the Labette County Medical Center in Parsons.

He was born July 18, 1916 in Parsons to Carey and Lela (Lenox) Chenoweth. He grew up on a farm near Parsons and attended Woods Country School. He later graduated from Parsons High School.

In 1937, he moved to Modesto, California, where he ran a dairy operation for a rancher. He married Marian E. "Esther" Addis on December 25, 1937, in Parsons. After the wedding they returned to the ranch in Modesto where Esther became the ranch cook.

In 1942, Francis returned to Kansas and bought a farm in McCune. He soon began his own dairy operation, farmed and worked for two years at the Katy Railroad Shops. In 1944 he and his family narrowly escaped a fire at their home in McCune. The fire totally destroyed their home.

Desiring a larger farm, he purchased a farm outside Parsons in 1955. He continued running his dairy operation and sold milk to many local residents who would drive to the farm to purchase fresh milk. He sold the dairy operation in 1978 but continued farming until he was well into his 70's. He lived on the farm until his death.

Francis was a board member for the Union School near McCune. Later, after moving to the farm outside of Parsons, he became a board member for the Prairie Valley School. He sold Dekalb seed corn to area farmers for several years. At times, he did custom ensilage cutting for other farmers as well. He was never afraid of hard work and took great pride in his many accomplishments.
