Freddie D. "Fred" Haviland, 80, of Erie, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Labette Health.

Fred was born on December 23, 1942, to Carl and Helen (Head) Haviland in Thayer, Kansas.  As a young boy, he grew up and attended school in Thayer, graduating from Thayer High School.  Following graduation, Fred enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country until being honorably discharged in 1964.

For many years, Fred was a truck driver.  He drove for many companies and the last was as an owner/operator contracted driver for Dahlsten Trucking until his retirement.

His greatest joy came from spending time with his family.  He enjoyed any and all sports.  If there was a game on, he would be watching it. Fred's favorite teams to watch were the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and the University of Kansas Jayhawks.

On November 2, 1962, Fred and Carolyn Nesbitt were united in marriage.  The couple later divorced in 1981.  Fred and Katherine "Katie" Diibon were united in marriage on February 14, 1988.  She preceded him in death on November 12, 2011.

Survivors include:

One son – Barry Haviland (Sharon) of Erie, Kansas

Two daughters – Michelle Yates of Erie, Kansas

Kitty Carriker (Monte) of Elsmore, Kansas

Two grandsons – Gregory and Nicholas Haviland

One granddaughter – Lakin Haviland

One step-granddaughter – Jennifer Stafford

Six great-grandchildren – Piper, Nicholas John, Bryson, Elody, Layne, and Damius

One step-great-granddaughter – Charli Stafford

Two brothers – Leon Haviland and Frank Haviland

Many nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Katie Haviland; two sisters, Kathy Haviland and Janet Kidwell; and three brothers, Charles "Chuck" Haviland, Bob Haviland, and Joe Haviland.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 28, 2023, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home of Parsons.  Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Fort Scott.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home.
