Gail A. Nelson

Gail A. Nelson, 73, of rural Mound Valley, passed away at 9:08 a.m., Saturday, December 4, 2021, at his home.

Gail Andy Nelson was born on October 13, 1948, to Andy J. and Regena Lee (Hoppock) Nelson in Parsons.  He grew up and attended school in Mound Valley, graduating from Labette County High School in 1966.

Following high school, Gail worked at Boeing in Wichita for a time.  He was then called to serve his country in the United States Army in Vietnam.  Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to the Mound Valley area and began working for the Katy Railroad and later the Union Pacific with the signal department.  At the age of 61, Gail retired from the railroad as a manager in signal construction.  Over the years, he raised cattle and helped other people farm.

He was a member of the Mound Valley United Methodist Church.  He was also a member of VFW Brown-Bishop Post 704 in Parsons.  His greatest joy came from spending time with his family.  He especially enjoyed going to Grand Lake and hosting family events.  An avid football and NASCAR fan, Gail was a NASCAR season ticket holder in Fort Worth and Kansas City for several years.

On November 19, 1982, Gail and Bonnie Sue Robinson were united in marriage at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parsons.  She survives of the home.

One son – Andrew Nelson and his wife, Tiffany, of Mound Valley, Kansas

One daughter -Veronica Thompson and her husband, Casey, of Dallas, Texas

One grandson – Riley Nelson and two grandchildren on the way

His mother – Regena Nelson of Mound Valley, Kansas

One niece – Tiffany Murphy of Kansas City, Missouri

One nephew – Darrin Nelson and his wife, Kim, of Mound Valley, Kansas

He was preceded in death by his father; and one brother, Darrell Nelson.

The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 9, 2021, at the Mound Valley United Methodist Church.  Burial will follow at the Mound Valley Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6 – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
