George A. Butler, 86, of Chanute, passed away at 4:35 p.m., Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at the Heritage Health Care Center in Chanute.
He was born on February 22, 1920 to John and Mary (Hofer) Butler near Greenbush, Kansas. He grew up and attended schools in St. Paul, graduating from St. Paul High School. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was stationed in the Philippines, New Guinea and Japan.
On June 19, 1947 he and Betty L. Carson were married in Walnut, Kansas at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She survives of the home.
In 1953, he and Betty moved to Chanute. He was employed by Wyeth Hardware Company of St. Joseph, Missouri as a salesman in the Chanute area until he retired. Following his retirement, he worked for Cleaver Farm and Home, in Chanute, through November of last year.
He was an enthusiastic supporter of all local and area sports. He was the #1 fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, the KU Jayhawks and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chanute, Past Exalted Ruler and lifetime member of the Chanute Elks Lodge, the V.F.W., and the American Legion, a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and active participant in the "0:900" club.

He was preceded in death by five brothers; Joe Butler, Chris Butler, Ed Butler, Dan Butler and Verdan Butler and three sisters; Agnes Smith, Liz Carroll and Mary Pierce.
Following cremation, the Funeral Mass is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 6, 2006 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chanute. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Walnut, Kansas with military honors given by Boerstler – May #170 American Legion. The rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 5, 2006 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chanute. The family will receive friends following the rosary.
