George D. McElroy, 85, of St. Paul, died at 2:15 p.m., Sunday, November 26, 2006 at the Prairie Mission Retirement Village in St. Paul. He had been in failing health.
He was born December 19, 1920 to Dewey and Alma (Darras) McElroy in Madrid, New Mexico. He grew up and attended schools in Raton, New Mexico.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a fighter plane pilot. He also served during the Korean conflict during which time he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Following his discharge, he flew an air ambulance for Thunderbird Aviation in Gallup, New Mexico. For a time, he worked in Grants, New Mexico in construction as superintendent of paving. He later moved to Ft. Worth, Texas before moving to St. Paul in 1972. He was employed as an independent truck driver before retiring in 1987. Following retirement, he worked for Beachner construction until his health failed in 1999.
He and Lydia Lewis were married on October 18, 1944. They were later divorced. On June 19, 1965, he and Margaret L. Brown were married in Gallup, New Mexico. She survives of the home.
He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in St.
Paul.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting and spending time with his family and friends.

Funeral Mass is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery with military honors given by the American Legion Post No. 116 of St. Paul. The Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at St. Francis Catholic Church. The family will receive friends following the rosary.
