Gerald R. "Jerry" Wertz, 78, of Parsons, passed away at 6:01 a.m., Thursday, December 8, 2016 at his home.
He was born May 9, 1938 in Oswego, Kansas to Forrest John and Mary Emma (Williams) Wertz. Jerry grew up in the rural area between Altamont and Oswego where he attended Fairview Grade School. In 1957, he graduated from Labette County Community High School in Altamont and later attended Parsons Jr. College.
On August 27, 1960, he and Thelma L. Berends were married in Miami, Oklahoma. Following marriage, they lived in Parsons until he was drafted in the United States Army in 1962. While serving his country, he was stationed in Germany for 18 months until being honorably discharged in 1967. Upon his return to Parsons, he worked at Ankortite Products, now Dayton Superior, as a welder for 49 ½ years.
His grandchildren were always his #1 priority. He enjoyed tinkering, carpentry, and woodworking.

Marlene Walker and her husband, Eldon Oswego, KS
Ellen Ehrlich Hutchinson, KS
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters-in-law.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 12, 2016 at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will be at Springhill Cemetery near Parsons. The family will receive friends from 7-8:00 p.m., Sunday, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
