Gertrude E. Lawson, 96, of Wichita, formerly of Altamont, died at 2:30 a.m., Monday, December 13, 2010, at Lakepoint at Crestview Assisted Living facility in Wichita.

She was born August 10, 1914, in Bluejacket, Oklahoma, to James Hiram A. and Dolly Jane (Golden) Carlton.

As a teenager, she moved with her family to Kansas where she lived until the death of her husband. For a time, she also lived in Oklahoma before moving to Payette, Idaho, where she lived until returning to Kansas three years ago. After her children were raised, she worked as a nurse's aide in local nursing homes in the Parsons and Altamont areas.

She and Glenn W. Lawson were married July 22, 1935, in Miami, Oklahoma. In June of 1991, they were recognized as Altamont Flag Day sweethearts. He preceded her in death on July 15, 1991.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altamont. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, two brothers, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 16, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Altamont. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church on Thursday.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 325, Altamont, KS 67330.
