Glen D. Carnahan

Glen D. Carnahan, 85, longtime farmer and dairyman of Altamont, died at 7:40 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin. His death was unexpected.

He was born January 31, 1926, in rural Parsons, Kansas, to William Lee Carnahan, Sr. and Olive (Houghton) Carnahan. He grew up in the rural Parsons area and moved with his family as a young adult to the family farm located west of Altamont. He was a graduate of Labette County Community High School in Altamont.

For a time, he worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant and Twin Valley Electric before starting his lifelong profession of farming and dairying. Before unification, he served as a member on the Altamont Grade School Board. He also was a sales representative for A.O. Smith Harvestore Company and bought and sold Holstein cattle.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altamont where he had served as trustee. In earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and officiating high school football and basketball. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, attending their activities and hosting family get-togethers. He was an avid K-State fan, and was always willing to help others.

He and Velma A. Solomon were married September 5, 1948, at the First Baptist Church in Altamont. She survives of the home.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Howard Carnahan; and two sisters, Evelyn Carnahan and Irene Miller.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 20, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Altamont. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m., Thursday, at the church.
