Harold D. Coles, 88, of Mound Valley, died at 6:32 p.m., Saturday, February 13, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society in Parsons.
He was born October 4, 1927 in rural Gridley, Kansas to Floyd and Elsie (Sandberg) Coles. At the age of 2, he moved to rural Mound Valley where he was raised. He attended school in Mound Valley and Altamont.
During World War II, Harold entered the United States Army on April 17, 1946. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army on October 10, 1947, he moved to the Chicago area where he met his future wife, Betty Whitten. On August 17, 1951, they were married in Harvey, Illinois. In 1964, they moved to Mound Valley where they made their home and raised their family. He became a meat cutter working in Southeast Kansas in local plants until retiring in 1995. Through the years, he had also worked at the Bartlett Co-op Association and part-time at Labette Health.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mound Valley where he served as a church trustee. In earlier years, Harold enjoyed fishing, volunteering at the church, and traveling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Betty J. Coles, on May 16, 2005; and one brother, Albert "Roy" Coles.
Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 22, 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Mound Valley. Burial will be at the Mound Valley Cemetery.
