Harry L. Meadows

Harry L. "Shorty" Meadows, 84, of Chetopa, died at 12:20 a.m., Thursday, July 12, 2007, at the Chetopa Manor Nursing Home.

He was born March 6, 1923, near Neal, Kansas, to Harry L. and Hope (Kester) Meadows. As a young boy, he grew up on a farm north of Fredonia. In later years, he moved to California where he worked for a Chevrolet dealership, then attended sheet metal school in Mir Island.

He served during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps in China as an airplane technician. Following his discharge, he lived in Fredonia, Oswego and eventually, Chetopa. He had also worked at McKinney Motors in Oswego and Blackledge Motor Company in Chetopa. He then opened his own auto body shop in Chetopa until 1971 at which time he moved to South Coffeyville where he ran South Town Auto Salvage until his retirement. After retirement, he moved to Flint Ridge, Oklahoma, where he and his wife built a new home where they lived for seven years before returning to Chetopa in 1998.

He and Elva OhDean McGaugh were married September 17, 1942, in Reno, Nevada. She survives.

He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Chetopa and a former member of the Chetopa Chamber of Commerce.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elwin Meadows and Mark Meadows; and two granddaughters, Rhonda Meadows and JoAnn Guinn.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 14, 2007, at the Faith Baptist Church in Chetopa. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Chetopa with military honors given by American Legion Post No. 147 Funeral Detail, Miami, Oklahoma. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., Friday, July 13, 2007, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa.
