Hazel Curran

Orpha Hazel Curran, 99, of Altamont, died at 8:30 p.m., Friday, April 22, 2011 at the Presbyterian Manor in Parsons.  She was born on August 10, 1911 south of Blue Mound, Kansas, the youngest of twelve children, born to Charles Franklin and Cloa Maude (Ellithorpe) Murrow.  She attended Elementary school at the Unity elementary school in the area, and attended High School at the Blue Mound High School.  On November 17, 1930, she was united in marriage to Gregg Mitchell Curran at Kansas City, Kansas.  To this union, three sons Lyman Dale "L.D.", James Darryl "Jim" and Franklin Julius "Frank" were born.  Hazel and Gregg lived most of their life in the Blue Mound, Mound City area, where they engaged in farming.  When their youngest son started to school, Hazel went to work as a clerk at the Blue Mound Hardware where she worked for ten years.  She then worked as a switchboard operator at the Blue Mound telephone office, and later went to work for the Braemoor coatfactory at Pleasanton, Kansas where she worked until retiring in 1971.Hazel was a resident of Linn County for 73 years until 1984 , when due to the failing health of her husband, Gregg, they moved to Altamont to be close to their son, L.D. and his wife, Christine.Hazel was a devoted wife, a loving and caring mother, kind, thoughtful and considerate of family, neighbors and friends.  She was a member of the Blue Mound United Methodist Church until moving to Altamont at which time she transferred her membership to the Altamont United Methodist Church.Her husband, Gregg, passed away on April 26, 1988.  An infant grandson, Dane Curran also preceded her in death in 1966, as did a granddaughter, Judy Marie Husted on January 9, 1997.   She is survived by three sons, L.D. and his wife, Christine of Altamont, Jim and his wife, Charlene of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and Frank and his wife, Judy of Ottawa, Kansas; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren and a host of friends and neighbors.Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, at the Altamont United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Reazin officiating.  Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m., at the Sunny Slope Cemetery at Blue Mound, Kansas.  The family will receive friends at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home at Altamont from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday.  The family suggests memorials to the Altamont United Methodist Church.  These may be left at or mailed to Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, P.O.
